Cancer and the Flu

  • If you have cancer and you develop flu-like symptoms, contact your health care provider or seek medical care and follow these steps for all people with health conditions.

  • Ask your health care providers if they have a flu outbreak plan. People with cancer and their caretakers should determine how they will access ongoing medical care such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy during a flu outbreak.

  • Many individuals from at-risk groups should also receive a vaccination for pneumococcal pneumonia. Individuals with cancer, or other diseases that compromise your immune system, should ask their health care providers if a second pneumococcal vaccination is necessary.
